ABOUT

Rogers Oil Tool Services, Inc. was established in 1978 by Tommie L. Rogers.  At that time, there was a big demand for service and repair of all major manufacturers’ drill-pipe spinners, tubing tongs and casing tongs. It became apparent, that the major manufacturers were concentrating their efforts on selling, and not on servicing of the equipment. Henceforth, this need to service the equipment was the spark that started Rogers Oil Tool Services, Inc.

Over the next several years, Rogers Oil Tool Services, Inc. continued to provide service and repair of drill-pipe spinners and tongs. However, in 1984, we were requested to assist the well control market by providing power tong support services. Rogers Oil Tool Services, Inc. began working with well control firefighters such as Red Adair, Boots & Coots, Wild Well Control, Otis Engineering, Cudd Pressure Control, Hydraulic Well Control, Black Devil, Italian Knight and other international well control companies.  Rogers Oil Tool Services, Inc. became a household name in the well control market because of their dependability and credibility.

While providing power tong support services to these well control companies, we were requested to develop equipment and provide rental and service to accommodate the higher torque drilling technology that the industry was experiencing. Consequently, Rogers Oil Tool Services, Inc. began discussions with several companies to meet the need of the industry. After thorough investigation and research, we teamed up with Joy Manufacturing to undertake this new endeavor.  Utilizing their existing 7 ¼” drill-pipe tong, necessary modifications to this equipment were made to meet the needs and expectations of our customers.

In the early 1990’s, the nature of drilling connection technology changed to large bore and/or high torque capacities.   Rogers Oil Tool Services, Inc. again was called upon to develop drill-pipe tongs to handle the large OD capacity and the high torque technology.  Consequently, in 1995 the 10” drill-pipe tong was designed, tested and introduced to the well control/snubbing market.  This tong is able to sustain 150,000 ft. lbs. of torque at 2,500 PSI. However, in honoring and adhering to the patent rights of Varco International, these drill-pipe tongs were available to the drilling market only on a rental basis and not for resale.

As the 90’s progressed and new drill-pipe technology began to make a difference in the drilling world, the drill-pipe tong needs in the conventional market changed as well.  Rogers Oil Tool Services, Inc. realized that, within its existing products, it already had the equipment designed and field tested for the past 10 years.  It would not be difficult to convert and adapt the existing equipment from well control work to conventional drill floor work.  After negotiations and ultimately an agreement with Varco International, this vision allowed Rogers Oil Tool Services, Inc. to market a full line of drill-pipe tongs for the conventional drilling market.

After an extensive research and discussion with drilling personnel, we developed our 8 ½” drill-pipe tong, capable of sustaining 100,000 ft. lbs. of torque @ 2,500 PSI.  This tong, not only meets the current needs for OD requirements, but its design is such that it is front-control mounted, thus the accessibility of the operations of the equipment is easier for rig floor personnel.

In Early 2005 Rogers Oil Tool Services, Inc. was approached and subsequently purchased by a newly formed energy company Allis Chalmers Energy.  Their focus was to incorporate our existing rental tong fleet into a new tubular service division while supporting the development of our manufacturing and automation systems for Drilling Contractors.  Our enhanced fleet buoyed by advancements in our automated systems positioned us to supply the largest contractors in the world such as Sea Drill, Ocean Rig, Diamond Offshore, Nabors, etc.  With wind in our sails we rapidly moved to develop and integrate our offshore based systems to that of land rigs.

In 2008, Rogers Oil Tools, Manufacturing Division was sold to ODS International in Houston, while the rental division stayed incorperated with Allis Chalmers and later Iron Gate.

In early 2016 Tommie Rogers acquired the inventory and intellectual properties from ODS and reestablished Rogers Oil Tools, llc in Broussard, La.  From that time Rogers Oil Tools has advanced their fully autonomous tong and tong positioning systems with a newly patented Cyber Vision™ , Connection Detection System.  Later in 2019 Rogers Oil Tools llc designed, tested and fielded our X-Force 10X Drill Pipe Tong in the GOM for several majors; successfully breaking out connections over 225,000 ft lbs of torque.

As evidenced over more than 40 years, Rogers Oil Tool Services, Ilc. has continually met the challenge and opportunities they have encountered.  We stand ready and available to address the needs of the future in the drilling industry.
